Bibury and the row of Arlington Row cottages, built for weavers in the seventeenth century, pass for the prettiest village in England. Bourton-on-the-Water is crossed by the Windrush and its low bridges. Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and Castle Combe complete the set. The region grew rich on wool, which explains its oversized churches.
Oxford is forty minutes from the eastern edge, Bath thirty from the southern edge, London two hours away.
The villages are linked by narrow lanes between dry stone walls, often single track with passing places. The train serves almost nothing: a car is the only serious option.
