Porto climbs above the Douro, its Ribeira quarter listed as World Heritage. The Dom Luís I bridge, two levels of wrought iron finished in 1886, was built by a former associate of Gustave Eiffel.
The port cellars are on the far bank, at Vila Nova de Gaia: Sandeman, Taylor’s and Graham’s age the wine in lodges open to visitors. The Lello bookshop and its red staircase, São Bento station with its twenty thousand azulejos, and the Clérigos tower at seventy-five metres complete the city.
Francisco Sá Carneiro airport is twenty minutes from the centre, with direct flights from several French cities. Lisbon is three hours away by road.
