Bodrum is built on a peninsula separating two bays. St Peter’s Castle, raised by the Knights of Rhodes in the fifteenth century, occupies the rock between the two harbours.
Its stones came partly from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, of which only a field of foundations remains.
The castle houses the museum of underwater archaeology, with wrecks raised from the Aegean, among them the Uluburun, three thousand years old.
Gümüslük, Yalıkavak and Türkbükü follow one another along the peninsula, each on its own bay.

The streets around the harbour are narrow and often closed. We drop off near the marina or the castle.
