The centre has risen again around Cathedral Square: the art gallery, Shigeru Ban’s cardboard Transitional Cathedral, the new streets of Riverside. The old tram still makes its loop between them.
Hagley Park and the botanic gardens take up a large slice of the city; the Avon is crossed by punt. An hour and a half away, the Banks Peninsula and the harbour of Akaroa keep their French names, inherited from a settlement of 1840.
The journey leaves Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and needs at least two connections, through the Gulf or Asia and then Auckland or Sydney: more than a day and a half of travelling. We handle the airport drop-off on the way out and meet you on the way back, with your flight number on file and waiting time included.
At the other end, the airport is twelve kilometres from the centre, with a single building for international and domestic flights — simpler than Auckland. The catch lies elsewhere: the TranzAlpine, the train that crosses the Southern Alps to Greymouth, leaves very early and does not run every day.
