The Main Square is the largest medieval square in Europe. Every hour a trumpeter sounds from St Mary’s tower and breaks off mid-note, in memory of the watchman killed by a Mongol arrow in 1241.
Wawel hill carries the royal castle and the cathedral where Poland’s kings are crowned and buried. Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine hangs in the Czartoryski Museum, a few streets away.
Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, has come back to life with its cafés and restored synagogues. Auschwitz-Birkenau is an hour and a half away; the visit needs half a day at least.
