Dalarna is the province where Sweden finds its images: wooden houses painted in Falun red, mountain barns, lakes fringed with birch. The pigment comes from the Falun copper mine, worked for a thousand years and now World Heritage listed.
The Dala horse, a wooden toy carved and painted since the 17th century, has become the emblem of the whole country; the Nusnäs workshops can be visited.
Dalarna keeps Midsummer most faithfully: a flowered maypole, regional dress and dancing by Lake Siljan, at Leksand and Rättvik.
Every March the Vasaloppet sends fifteen thousand cross-country skiers over the ninety kilometres from Sälen to Mora; it is the oldest cross-country ski race in the world.
