Lower downtown, LoDo, is arranged around Union Station, a restored terminal that has become the city’s living room, with its cafés and hotels. The Denver Art Museum and the State Capitol hold the centre, where one step of the entrance is engraved at exactly one mile.
Red Rocks, some twenty kilometres west, is a natural amphitheatre between two red cliffs. Beyond it the Rockies begin: Boulder at forty-five kilometres, the national park at a hundred and ten, the ski resorts further still along Interstate 70.
The flight leaves Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and lands at Denver International, recognisable by its white tented roof. The airport is forty kilometres north-east of downtown, out on the plain: the distance often surprises travellers who have cut their timing fine. We handle the airport drop-off on the way out and meet you on the way back.
On the ground, the A Line train links the airport to Union Station, where Amtrak’s California Zephyr also calls, one of the finest rail journeys in the country. In winter, Interstate 70 towards the resorts can close during snow events, and the altitude makes itself felt as soon as you climb: it pays to allow extra time.
