Before the Fens were drained in the 17th century, Ely was an island in the marshes. Its cathedral, nicknamed the Ship of the Fens, is still seen from far off across this entirely flat landscape.
Its octagonal lantern tower, built after the central tower collapsed in 1322, is a feat of carpentry unique in Europe: four hundred tonnes of timber and lead held above the void.
Oliver Cromwell’s house, where he lived for ten years as a tithe collector before becoming Lord Protector, is visited with its reconstructed rooms.
The Fens, won from the water by Dutch-built drains, remain the most fertile land in England. Cambridge and its colleges lie some twenty kilometres south.
