Fez el-Bali has close to ten thousand lanes, many too narrow for a loaded donkey: it is the largest car-free urban area in the world, World Heritage since 1981.
Al Quaraouiyine university, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihriya, is recognised as the oldest continuously operating university on the planet. The Chouara tanneries have worked hides in stone vats since the eleventh century, by the same methods; they are watched from the terraces of the leather merchants. The Bou Inania madrasa and the royal palace with its seven bronze doors complete the city.
Fez-Saïss airport is fifteen kilometres out, with direct flights from several French cities. Meknes is an hour away, Volubilis and its Roman ruins an hour and a quarter.
The medina is entirely closed to vehicles. Set-down is at Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif or Bab Guissa depending on the riad, and a porter takes the luggage from there.
