Johannesburg grew out of a gold reef and never stopped spreading. Business has moved from the old central district up to Sandton and Rosebank, where the country’s deals are done today.

The old centre keeps its 1960s towers and the Nelson Mandela Bridge, but the head offices, the hotels and the galleries have moved to Sandton and Rosebank, some ten kilometres north. Maboneng and Braamfontein have brought part of the old downtown back to life.
Soweto, to the south-west, is visited for Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum; the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill tell the rest of the story. The city is covered by car: the distances are long and pavements are rare.
The direct flight leaves Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and lands at O. R. Tambo, about twenty-five kilometres east of the centre and thirty-five from Sandton. There is barely any time difference: you land in the morning ready for the day. We handle the airport drop-off on the way out and meet you on the way back.
The local catch is the second airport: many domestic and low-cost flights leave from Lanseria, to the north-west, not from Tambo. On the rail side, Park Station gathers the main lines and the Gautrain, which links the airport to Sandton; the Rovos Rail, though, departs from Pretoria, an hour away by road.
