Wordsworth was born at Cockermouth and lived at Dove Cottage in Grasmere; his daffodils were written beside Ullswater. Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top near Sawrey with the Peter Rabbit royalties, then fifteen farms she left to the National Trust. Windermere is England’s longest lake, Wast Water its deepest.
Manchester is two hours away, Carlisle forty minutes from the north of the park. Oxenholme station serves Windermere on a branch line.
The roads are narrow and the passes — Hardknott, Wrynose — reach thirty per cent gradients, best avoided with luggage. Village car parks fill before ten in season.
