Marrakesh owes its colour to the rammed earth mixed with lime of its walls, nineteen kilometres raised in the twelfth century. The Koutoubia, a seventy-seven-metre minaret, was the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat.
Jemaa el-Fna square turns into an open-air kitchen at dusk; its oral life is on the Unesco intangible heritage list. The Majorelle garden, planted by the painter Jacques Majorelle and saved by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980, keeps its patented blue. The Bahia and El Badi palaces, the Saadian tombs and the souks complete the medina.
Menara airport is ten minutes from the centre, with direct flights from a dozen French cities.
The medina is closed to cars: set-down is at the gates — Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Agnaou — depending on the riad. The Atlas, Ouarzazate and Essaouira are two or three hours away by road.
