In the late 17th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail made Meknes his capital and ringed it with forty kilometres of walls. The Bab Mansour gate, with its marble columns and zellij tilework, remains Morocco’s most spectacular.
Monumental granaries, stables and the Agdal basin testify to an extraordinary undertaking, built to feed an entire garrison and court.
Some thirty kilometres away, Volubilis holds the best-preserved Roman remains in the Maghreb: a triumphal arch, a basilica and mosaics still in place in the patrician houses.
