Backed against the Atlas, Ouarzazate commands the roads dropping towards the Drâa and the Sahara. The town grew around the Taourirt kasbah, a former stronghold of the Glaoui family.
Its clear sky and very pure light brought film studios here from the 1960s, among the largest in the world.
Some thirty kilometres away, the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou stacks its earthen houses above the river. World Heritage listed, it has served as a set for many productions.
To the south, the Drâa valley unrolls the country’s longest palm grove as far as Zagora, while the Thousand Kasbahs road leads to the Dadès and Todra gorges.
