Pont-Aven takes its name from the bridge over the Aven, a river that drops in falls between the rocks in the middle of town. The mills were still turning in the nineteenth century.

Gauguin stayed there from 1886 and formed, with Émile Bernard and Paul Sérusier, what became known as the Pont-Aven school.
The Bois d’Amour follows the river, along the path where Sérusier painted The Talisman in 1888.
The chapel of Trémalo holds the wooden yellow Christ that inspired Gauguin’s canvas.
