The city keeps its successive layers: the Roman arch of Galerius, Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and baths, and 1930s blocks built after the great fire.
Ano Poli, the upper town, escaped the fire of 1917. Its lanes and overhanging houses look out over the bay.
The Rotunda, a former Roman mausoleum, and the archaeological museum sit in the centre, within walking distance.
