Charles Darwin was born here in 1809; his school became the town library, and his statue sits in front of it.
Some twenty kilometres away, the Iron Bridge, thrown across the Severn in 1779, is the first cast-iron bridge in the world. It gave the gorge its name and marks the starting point of the industrial revolution.
Ten museums are spread along the gorge: the Coalbrookdale furnace, the porcelain works, the reconstructed Victorian village of Blists Hill.
