Val d’Isère sits at the head of the upper Tarentaise, at 1,850 metres, linked to Tignes to form the Espace Killy. The village stretches along a single road, from La Daille to Le Fornet.
The climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is some thirty kilometres of hairpins. On changeover Saturdays it can take far longer than the map suggests.
Geneva is about 180 kilometres away, Lyon slightly more. Bourg-Saint-Maurice station, at the foot of the valley, takes the night trains and the Saturday TGVs.
