The centre runs down to Waitematā Harbour, where the ferries leave for Devonport, Waiheke and the volcanic cone of Rangitoto. The Sky Tower works as a landmark from almost anywhere, and cruise ships tie up on Queens Wharf, a few steps from the offices.
The city spreads over its volcanic cones: One Tree Hill and its park, Mount Eden, the Domain with its war memorial museum. Five minutes at the top of any of them explains how the isthmus is put together, and why everyone talks about the traffic on the Harbour Bridge.
No direct flight links France to New Zealand: the journey starts at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and goes through the Gulf or South-East Asia, with more than a day of travelling. At the other end, Auckland Airport is at Māngere, some twenty kilometres south of the centre, and its international and domestic terminals are separate buildings: a connection on to Queenstown or Christchurch has to allow for that move. One more thing that catches people out — the Northern Explorer train to Wellington does not leave from Britomart downtown, but from The Strand station in Parnell.
