The Rows, two-level shopping galleries built in the thirteenth century, exist nowhere else: a street of shops at ground level, another on the first floor, under half-timbered fronts. The Roman amphitheatre, the largest in the country, surfaces near the cathedral. Roodee racecourse, in a bend of the Dee, is the oldest still in use in the world.
Liverpool is forty minutes away, Manchester an hour, their airports barely more. Wales starts ten minutes away.
The historic centre is largely pedestrian and ringed by the wall. Set-down is at the gates, Northgate or Eastgate.
